There is no single worldwide cut-off, but large-diameter steel pipe generally means pipe with an outside diameter of about 16 inches (406 mm) and above. Some suppliers only start their large-diameter ranges at 24 inches (610 mm), and the biggest welded pipe can reach well over 100 inches. Typical uses include oil, gas and water transmission lines, bridge and port foundations, piles and offshore wind monopiles.
LSAW pipe is formed from steel plate and welded along one straight seam, so it handles thick walls and high pressure and is widely used for oil, gas and offshore lines. SSAW pipe is formed from coil and welded along a spiral seam, which makes it more economical for water lines, piling and lower-pressure service. Seamless pipe has no weld at all and suits heavy-wall or high-temperature service, but at large sizes it is usually made by hot expansion, which limits the maximum diameter and raises the cost compared with welded pipe.
There is no fixed price, because large-diameter pipe is usually quoted per ton or per meter for a specific order, and the price moves with the cost of steel plate and coil. The main factors are the manufacturing process (SSAW spiral pipe is usually the most economical, LSAW costs more, and large seamless pipe is usually the most expensive), the steel grade (high-strength or sour-service grades cost more than plain carbon steel), the outside diameter and wall thickness, coating, testing and certification requirements, order quantity, and freight to your site. To compare suppliers fairly, send each one the same specification and ask for the price with the same delivery terms.
Buried and subsea pipelines are usually protected with FBE, 3LPE or 3LPP coating, and some mills apply internal coating as well. Common tests include ultrasonic testing of the weld, a hydrostatic pressure test on each pipe, and X-ray inspection of weld ends. Agree on the test plan, and on third-party inspection if you want it, before production starts so that any problems are found at the mill and not on site.
